Every “top 10 battery manufacturer” list has the same problem: it ranks companies by how big they are, not by whether you can buy from them. Work down one of those lists as an installer with a 40-unit project and you will spend a week emailing companies that either sell cells by the gigawatt-hour or route every enquiry back to a certified-installer program you are not in. The list was never wrong. It was answering a different question.

Short answer: LiFePO4 manufacturers fall into three tiers by reachability. Cell giants (CATL, EVE, BYD) sell at OEM volume and will not quote a project. Branded system houses (Tesla, Enphase, FranklinWH) sell only through authorised distribution or certified installers, on fixed terms. Factory-direct system suppliers are the tier that will actually quote you — but that tier is the one you have to vet yourself.

This guide sorts the market by that single axis: can you actually place an order? It also gives you the four questions that separate a supplier who will quote your project from one who will waste your quarter.

Why Most “Top 10 Manufacturer” Lists Don’t Help You Buy

Pull up the highest-ranking roundups for this query and read the actual company names. One well-ranked list mixes residential wall-mounted batteries with iron-flow, zinc-flow and iron-air companies whose products are built for multi-hour utility storage. Another lists ten cell manufacturers — the firms that press electrode material into prismatic cans and ship them to system builders.

Both lists are factually accurate. Both are useless for procurement. A flow-battery company serving grid operators cannot sell you a 10 kWh wall-mount unit, and a cell producer shipping to automotive OEMs has no channel for a 40-unit order. The lists rank by prominence. You need to sort by reachability.

The Reachability Tiers

Reachability is the ability to get a quote, negotiate terms, and place an order at your volume. It has almost nothing to do with company size, and it is the first thing to establish before you compare specifications.

Tier 1 — Cell Giants

Who: CATL, EVE Energy, BYD, Samsung SDI, and the other large-format cell producers.

What they sell: cells and modules, by the container, to system integrators and vehicle manufacturers. When you read that a home battery “uses grade-A cells,” these are usually the companies that made them. EVE, for instance, supplies the large-format LFP cells that a great many system houses build their enclosures around.

Can you buy? No — not as an installer or a regional distributor. Their commercial minimum is measured in gigawatt-hours, and they have no residential channel. Naming them in a supplier shortlist is a category error, not a shortcut to quality.

Why they still matter: they tell you what is inside the box. Asking a Tier 3 supplier which cell they use, and whether they can show batch traceability, is a fair and revealing question.

Rule of thumb: if a company’s smallest commercial unit is a shipping container of cells, it is not your supplier — it is your supplier’s supplier. Ask about it, do not email it.

Tier 2 — Branded System Houses

Who: Tesla (Powerwall), Enphase (IQ Battery), FranklinWH (aPower), and similar consumer-facing brands.

What they sell: a finished, closed system — battery, electronics, app, warranty, and often the inverter, as one product with one support line.

Can you buy? Only through the channel they define. Tesla routes residential work through its certified-installer program. Enphase sells through authorised distribution. Terms, pricing structure and product configuration are set by the brand, not negotiated with you.

What installers actually tell us: the recurring complaint about Tier 2 is not the hardware — the hardware is good. It is that the certification lock-in becomes the real cost. You carry the training, the program requirements, and a margin structure someone else sets. For a company doing a handful of jobs a year that trade is often worth it. Tier 3 — Factory-Direct System Suppliers

Who: companies that build finished 48 V (51.2 V) LFP systems and sell them directly to installers, EPCs and distributors. Fortress Power and EG4 Electronics operate from the US side; BSLBATT, Pylontech, Dyness and Savolture supply from production in China. The tier is broad and its quality range is genuinely wide.

What they sell: wall-mounted, stackable and rack-mounted LFP modules, usually 5–16 kWh per unit, built to pair with third-party hybrid inverters rather than a proprietary one.

Can you buy? Yes. This is the tier that will send you a quote, discuss order volume, and in most cases support OEM labelling. Pylontech is worth knowing simply for how many inverter platforms list it as a tested pairing. Fortress Power lists its eFlex and eForce systems under UL 9540 for the North American market. EG4 sells server-rack format units through a largely online channel that suits smaller orders.

The catch: nobody has pre-vetted these suppliers for you. In Tier 2 the brand did the compliance work and you inherited it. Here, verification is your job — which is what the rest of this guide is about.

Two Scenarios That Show the Tier Boundary

Consider a distributor in the Texas Hill Country stocking for roughly sixty residential retrofits a year. Tier 2 gives them one support line and a brand homeowners recognise, but the margin structure and the certified-installer requirement are set elsewhere, and every job carries that overhead. Tier 3 gives them negotiable terms and OEM labelling — and hands them the compliance work that the Tier 2 brand had been absorbing. The right answer depends entirely on whether they have someone who can read a certification file.

Now picture a rural EPC on the Oregon coast quoting an off-grid job with a Sol-Ark inverter already on site. Tier 2 is largely out: the closed systems want their own inverter. What matters here is whether a Tier 3 supplier can name the protocol and confirm a closed-loop handshake with that specific inverter in writing. A supplier who answers “compatible with most inverters” has not answered. One who answers “CAN 2.0B at 500 kbps, and here is the setting” has.

Pro tip: the tier you belong in is not fixed by your size — it is fixed by whether you have someone who can verify compliance. That single capability is what makes Tier 3’s lower cost accessible instead of dangerous.

The Reachability Test: Four Questions

Four questions separate a supplier who will quote your project from one who will absorb three weeks of your time. Each targets a specific way this tier goes wrong.

1. Is the certification held at model level or brand level?

This is the single most useful question, and the most commonly fudged. Certification attaches to a specific model, not to a company. A supplier who answers with a company-level claim — that the business holds a UL certification — has told you nothing; a supplier saying “this model is listed under UL 1973, and here is the file” has told you everything.

Know the hierarchy too: UL 9540 covers the complete energy storage system, UL 1973 covers the battery module inside it, and cell-level certification sits below both. A module-level listing does not make a system UL 9540 compliant. Ask separately about UL 9540A — it is not a listing but a thermal runaway fire propagation test, and it is increasingly the document an authority having jurisdiction actually wants to see before approving an indoor installation. The test method reached its sixth edition in March 2026, and NFPA 855 is what ties those results to real installation limits such as spacing and siting. 2. Will they state an MOQ posture?

Most of this tier does not publish minimum order quantities, and that is normal — volumes are quoted against real projects, not price sheets. What matters is whether they will describe the posture: does MOQ move with customisation, does a stock configuration carry a lower minimum, does OEM labelling raise it. A supplier who cannot explain what drives their MOQ usually has not thought about it, which tells you something about the rest of the operation.

3. Do they name the protocol, not just “compatibility”?

“Compatible with most inverters” is marketing. “CAN 2.0B at 500 kbps and RS485 Modbus RTU, closed-loop with the following inverter models” is an engineering answer. Closed-loop communication is what lets the inverter read true state of charge from the BMS instead of inferring it from voltage, and it is the difference between a system that manages itself and one that surprises the homeowner at 2 a.m.

4. Will they accept a factory audit or third-party inspection?

The answer to this question is binary and it is the cheapest filter you have. A supplier who welcomes an audit — yours, or an independent inspection body’s — is making a claim they know will be checked. A supplier who deflects has told you what you needed to know. What the four questions don’t settle

They qualify a supplier. They do not close a deal, and it is worth knowing what still has to be worked out in conversation — because these are the items that hurt after the first order, not before it.

  • The RMA path. A unit fails in year three. Who diagnoses it, who pays freight, and does the replacement come from stock or from the next production run? For an overseas supplier this is a materially different question than it is for a Tier 2 brand with regional service.
  • Model continuity. Tier 3 model lines change faster than Tier 2 ones. If you standardise a portfolio on a specific module, ask how long that exact model will remain available — a warranty replacement is worth little if the model is discontinued and the replacement will not parallel with the existing bank.
  • Incoterms and who clears customs. A quote is not comparable until you know whether it is FOB, CIF or delivered, and lithium shipments carry dangerous goods handling on top. This is where UN 38.3 and the MSDS stop being paperwork and start being the reason a container moves or sits.
  • Payment structure. Deposit exposure to a supplier in another jurisdiction is a commercial risk, not a technical one. It belongs in the same conversation as the specification, not after it.

Rule of thumb: ask the four questions by email before any call. A supplier who answers all four in writing has pre-qualified themselves; one who wants a call first is usually deferring the part they cannot put in writing.
